As a freelance M, E & Plant Engineering Services Engineer, Tony Thurgood has:

• been responsible for front-end studies on major development projects up to £45m;
• advised on the technical suitability of the ideas and sketch designs behind a multi-million planning submission;
• advised a national company on the amendments to their works and processes to meet with safety and BS5750 requirements;
• been design-team leader on 2 no. £50m fit-out contract bid for a major national construction group;
• been the site resident M&E supervising and co-ordination engineer for the refurbishment and up-grading of several major buildings including listed ones within The Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport, Plymouth, again for a major national contractor;
• been the site resident M&E supervising and co-ordination engineer on the upgrading of a steelworks in Lincoln which included the installation of a new cupola and raw materials handling plant;
• been the site resident M&E supervising and co-ordination engineer for the National Marine Aquarium (1st Phase) in Plymouth where the plant included all of the aquatic life support systems in addition to the normal public buildings systems (M&E Value £2.75m +);
• been the site M, E & Plant Engineering Construction Supervisor on "The Eden Project" (Phases 1&2) in Cornwall (M&E Value £6.75m+);
• developed and supervised the installation of a total alternate energy building at “The Eden Project”;
• supervised and co-ordinated M&E services in 2 no. new hospital projects in Plymouth and 4 no. new primary school projects in Exeter.

Wood Energy Ltd
Provide construction design support and detailing over 2 years to Biomass boiler supplier and installer during a period of major market consolidation and change. Boilers and fuel storage plant technology development on projects ranging from 80kW to 5MW.

Plymouth University
Supervise all M&E installations for main-contractor Midas Construction on 2 no. Laboratory re-furbishments, including Clean-room.

Oaklands Special School, Dawlish
Supervise all M&E installations for main-contractor Midas Construction on new Residential and Respite Care blocks and a teaching block at a Special School for severely handicapped children.

Plymouth University
Feasibility studies for several block / area re-furbishments including lecture theatres, it hubs, and total block vent system re-alignment and supervise M&E installations on 4 no. Laboratory re-furbishments.

Newton Abbot Hospital
Supervise all M&E installations for Rydon Constuction on new local hospital project including minor ops theatres, maternity delivery, treatment rooms and wards. Incl. gas fired chp plant, and full heat recovery.

Primary Schools, Exeter
M&E Co-ordinator and Design Manager for Lorne Stewart on 4 No. new Primary Schools, all with underfloor heating, interactive white boards and multiple class-room computers.

Mount Gould Hosp, Plymouth
Package Manager, Co-ordinator and Design Manager for all M&E and 40+ off-site built sanitary pods for Midas Constuction on new Hospital and Medical Care Centre.

DTC Hospital Plymouth
Design Manager and Co-ordinator for all M&E aspects for the conversion of a factory unit into a new hospital diagnostics and treatment block that included 2 full operating theatres, x-ray suites and wards and required the on-site re-design of the main plant room and sterilisation steam raising plant.

Eden Toilet Block
Designer and Installation supervisor for all M&E for remote toilet block and bus terminus for client. All systems are RENEWABLES based including the use of solar-PV, solar-thermal, and wind turbine to provide ALL power, heating and hot water via underfloor heating, automatic taps and local distribution networks.

"The Eden Project", St.Austell, Cornwall, Phases 1 & 2
Site-based M&E Construction Manager for McAlpine JV, McAlpine JV. Work included some elements of detailed design for localised plant and equipment including all 4 no. HV / LV substations and potential multi use lighting bollards

Falmouth College of Art
Prepared M&E Design Briefs and layout drawings (CAD) for revisions to the Textiles and Design Graphics Departments, all for Davis Langdon & Everest, Project Managers and QS's.

Exeter University and Laboratories
Provide M&E technical back-up support for Midas Construction site staff for The Environment Agency during the construction of a university / industry out-source faculty and a large laboratory refurbishment.

15 Dock, Devonport Royal Dockyard
Provide on-site inspection, co-ordination, test witnessing; off-site factory test witnessing and qa inspection of M&E Services and Plant suppliers for main civils contractor Kier Construction during up-grading of seismic capability of nuclear submarine dry-dock facility. Wrote setting-to-work and commissioning procedures to NII / MOD approvals.

National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth
M, E & Plant Engineering Package Manager providing on-site technical support to project managers Symonds Woolf in the form of inspection and test witnessing and on-site systems / construction co-ordination and running technical meetings. Supervised the completion of all "snagging" including building side. Works responsibility included all aquaculture life support systems.

Marks & Spencer Stores
M, E & Plant Engineering Package Manager providing supervision, co-ordination, monitoring and test witnessing during the extension, modernisation and up-grading of 2 No. stores at Barnstaple and Worcester for main contractor EBC Construction. Systems included heating, vent, fire sprinklers, escalators, lifts, lighting, security, POS, cctv, etc., etc.

10 Dock, Devonport Royal Dockyard
M, E & Plant Engineering Package Manager providing inspection, co-ordination, test witnessing; off-site factory test witnessing and qa inspection of M&E Services and Plant suppliers for main civils contractor Kier Construction during seismic upgrading works of dry dock to enable acceptance of nuclear submarines whilst Docks 14 & 15 are similarly upgraded.

Experience and Qualification

Tony Thurgood has 40 years plus experience and knowledge of the construction industry, having reached works manager "on the tools", he also holds engineering qualifications to HNC level, and the following ERB and professional society memberships:-

CSCS Site Manager Accreditation

Tony has held senior design, senior design supervision and senior installation construction manager positions within the construction industry, on both the consultancy and construction sides, for over 30 years and as a result, is considered to be a Senior Project Development Engineer with wide and extensive construction sector knowledge and experience. Holds CSCS Site Manager Accreditation.

He is an enthusiastic project investigator, experienced in pre-works investigation, project development and in on-site multi-service installation co-ordination, involving experience of most aspects of environmentally based building engineering servicing across a wide range of industry sectors.
